Scarlet Winter (Set Design Lecture)

Set Design Lecture 5th January 2022

Set design is something I've never considered as a career path, until Guest speaker Scarlet Winter mentioned that set design can be a wide range of different things in the design industry.

Set design can be looked at from many angles in design from the likes of Film, TV and Music Videos/ Visualisation to Fashion Editorial and Advertising along side Event Design, Retail and Pop Ups. Music Videos/ Visualisation is one of the pathways I would like to experience as I have a background in music production. This would be a good experience for me as it would provide me with the skills and knowledge from that field to implement into my own design studio in the future.

Scarlet also stated some tips on being an assistant or intern in the industry as listed below, giving us the general insight on what to expect and how to approach the working day .

. Time, Phone, Amenable

. Write Down Everything

. Develop Relationships with Other Assistance Or Designers

. Read the Room and Understand the Hierarchy

. Anticipate what is required - (How They Navigate)

Other Notes added from Scarlets lecture was that, as an intern or assistant you should watch like a hawk. By doing this ask, What Is their design method?, How do they interact with clients, How do they pitch and present and finally How do they manage a budget?. This would give a better understanding on how to become a professional designer with in the industry and most importantly learning new ideas to add to my own designs.
